"I don't mind Housekeeping a bit!"

The Universal coffee percolator, bread maker, aluminum ware, electric grill and toaster, electric waffle iron, vacuum cleaner, electric washer, and electric iron all make housework a pleasure!

Ad from 1920.

  1. As sexist as an ad like this may seem now, I've been reading how household appliances completely revolutionized women's lives - for the first time, they actually had free time in their day to pursue other interests!

  2. That's a very good point, Cammie. On my vintage123.com website, for example, I had an entry about electric vacuum cleaners from 1911. The author of the article was very enthusiastic and explained that "the terrors of the old, primitive ways of housecleaning... are gone forever!" It's easy to forget how incredibly demanding and time-consuming housework was in the past and how much these inventions made life a little easier for women who took care of the home.
